Like the hill stations in Malaysia, early British settlers to Australia were attracted to the temperate climate of Kangaroo Valley as an escape from the oppressive heat of the lowlands summer. Its pioneers were offered land in return for clearing the brush and scrubland and it remains an important agricultural centre today, with more than a hint of its British roots.
