The British Museum, located in Great Russel Street, is undoubtedly one of the finest museums on the planet. Its collection, often controversially, contains artefacts from every continent and includes many important pieces from ancient Rome, Egypt and Greece (including the famous Elgin Marbles, above).

The museum was founded in 1753 and grew over the following centuries as a result of Britain's colonial footprint.
